Job Description & Requirements
Headache Neurologist
StartDate: ASAP Pay Rate: $270000.00 - $325000.00

The Department of Neurology at SUNY Upstate Medical University invites applications for a Headache Neurologist to join its established Headache Program in Syracuse, New York.

The incoming physician will join at an important point in the program’s continued growth. Four providers have recently been added to support headache care, including two nurse practitioners and two new graduates. An experienced physician may have the opportunity to guide this developing team and help shape the program’s future direction. Candidates who prefer to focus on clinical care, education, and academic interests may join as regular faculty without a formal leadership expectation.

This position offers the ability to step into meaningful patient demand while joining an established academic department with approximately 40 neurology faculty members. The Headache Program serves a broad referral region spanning more than 20 counties and approximately two million residents. Its existing patient panel includes more than 1,000 patients.

An Established Foundation for Headache Care

Physicians practice primarily at the dedicated Headache Center located within the Upstate Bone & Joint Center in East Syracuse. The center includes clinical space, infusion capabilities, and dedicated capacity for headache patients. Available procedures include Botox injections, nerve blocks, trigger point injections, and SPG procedures.

The department also provides access to a comprehensive range of neurological subspecialties, including stroke, neurocritical care, epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology, neuromuscular medicine, sleep medicine, pediatric neurology, and neuro-ophthalmology. Clinical research support is available through an established research team and clinical coordinators.

Design a Faculty Role Around Your Interests

The position can be tailored to the experience and professional goals of the selected physician. Potential areas of focus include:

  • Clinical headache medicine and procedural care
  • Medical education and resident teaching
  • Clinical research
  • Program development
  • Administrative or physician leadership
  • Future fellowship development

The position offers a weekday-focused schedule with protected non-clinical time based on the physician’s academic, research, administrative, educational, or leadership interests. Inpatient responsibilities are limited primarily to consultation coverage, with an estimated rotation of three weeks and three weekends annually.

Position Highlights

  • Join an established Headache Program with immediate patient demand
  • Work with two dedicated nurse practitioners and two new graduates supporting headache care
  • Step into an existing panel of more than 1,000 patients
  • Choose between a traditional faculty role and a potential leadership pathway

Candidate Qualifications

Qualified candidates should be board certified or board eligible in Neurology and fellowship trained in Headache Medicine. The department welcomes both experienced physicians and junior faculty. Candidates from non-academic settings may also be considered, as may Canadian-trained physicians and candidates requiring H-1B visa support.

Facility Location
The economic and cultural crossroads of central New York, Syracuse boasts dynamic seasons and dramatic panoramas that change throughout the year. Nestled among rolling green hills, this safe and welcoming community boasts a wonderful cultural vibrancy and recreational attractions that are comparable to a much larger city.
